SEExtraverted Sensing

Extraverted Sensing (Se) - Se users are highly attuned to their immediate environment, focusing on real-time experiences and tangible details in the present moment. They thrive on sensory stimulation and are drawn to new adventures, physical activities, and exciting experiences. Se-dominant individuals are spontaneous and action-oriented, making quick decisions based on what's happening right now. They excel at responding to immediate situations and are often skilled at reading body language and environmental cues. Se users are practical and hands-on, preferring to learn through direct experience rather than theory. They enjoy living in the moment and can bring energy and excitement to any situation. However, they may struggle with long-term planning and can be impulsive, sometimes missing deeper meanings or future implications.

Overview

Extraverted Sensing (SE) is one of the eight cognitive functions in Jungian typology and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator system. Understanding how this function operates and where it appears in different type stacks provides valuable insights into personality structure and cognitive preferences.

Personality Types by Position

The following personality types have Extraverted Sensing (SE) in each position:

Hero (1st) Position

Se Hero is your dominant function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Hero function means you naturally engage with the present moment, responding to immediate situations with spontaneity and action. You're highly attuned to your environment and thrive on sensory experiences and new adventures. This is your primary way of engaging with the world - through direct experience, physical action, and living in the moment.

Parent (2nd) Position

Se Parent is your auxiliary function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Parent function means you use it to help others engage with the present moment and take action. You nurture spontaneity and practical engagement in others, often encouraging them to experience life directly rather than just thinking about it.

Child (3rd) Position

Se Child is your tertiary function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Child function brings playfulness and spontaneity to your personality. You enjoy engaging with your environment and having new experiences, especially when it's fun and doesn't require serious commitment. This function adds energy and action, though it may manifest as impulsiveness or difficulty planning ahead when underdeveloped.

Inferior (4th) Position

Se Inferior is your aspirational function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Inferior function represents an area of growth and insecurity. You may struggle with being present and can feel disconnected from your physical environment. When developed, this function helps you become more grounded and action-oriented, engaging with the world more directly.

Nemesis (5th) Position

Se Nemesis challenges your dominant function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Nemesis function creates internal resistance to being present and taking action, often manifesting as worry about immediate consequences or avoidance of spontaneity. It can make you defensive when others suggest acting without planning.

Critic (6th) Position

Se Critic judges your present-moment awareness. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Critic function creates harsh self-judgment about your ability to engage with the present or respond to immediate situations. It may tell you that you're missing what's happening right now or that you're too slow to act, undermining your confidence.

Blind Spot (7th) Position

Se Blind is your weakest function. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Blind function represents a significant blind spot - you struggle to engage with the present moment and notice immediate details that seem obvious to others. You may envy those who easily live in the moment or resent their tendency to act without thinking, as this represents what you find most difficult to grasp.

Demon (8th) Position

Se Demon undermines your sense of presence. Extraverted Sensing (Se) as your Demon function can sabotage you by making you feel disconnected from reality or overwhelmed by sensory input. When integrated, it offers profound insights about being present and helps you engage with the world more directly.

Characteristics

Extraverted Sensing represents a specific way of processing information and engaging with the world. When this function is in a dominant position (Hero), it shapes your primary approach to life.
